Tibetan Singing Bowls

Strike a good singing bowl once and the sound seems to come from everywhere at once, then takes the better part of a minute to fully leave the room. Our Tibetan singing bowls are chosen for exactly that quality of tone, hand beaten pieces whose sound is rich, layered and long. Whether you practise sound meditation seriously or simply want one beautiful ritual in your day, a bowl from this collection will still be doing its work decades from now.

Hand Beaten Singing Bowls for Meditation and Sound Practice

Tibetan singing bowls originate in the Himalayan regions of Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan, where they have marked the rhythms of meditation practice for centuries. A hand beaten bowl produces several frequencies at once, a fundamental tone with overtones layered above it, which is what gives the sound its remarkable depth compared with machine made bowls. To play, rest the bowl on a flat open palm, strike the rim gently with the mallet, or circle the mallet slowly around the outside edge with steady pressure until the continuous singing tone builds. Beginners usually find the singing tone within a few minutes of practice. Bowl size shapes the voice, with smaller bowls around 10cm giving bright clear tones and larger bowls producing deeper, longer sustains that suit group sound baths. Each of our bowls comes with a wooden mallet. Many people begin or end meditation by striking the bowl three times and letting each tone fade completely, a simple ritual that settles the mind remarkably well. Bowls need almost no care beyond an occasional wipe with a dry cloth.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose my first bowl?
Go by size and sound. Smaller bowls give brighter, higher tones. Bowls around 14 to 16cm are the versatile home-meditation size with fuller sustain. Larger bowls give deep tones you feel as much as hear. If unsure, mid-size is the safe first bowl.
How do I play it?
Rest the bowl flat on your open palm or its cushion, never gripped by the sides. Strike the rim gently for a bell tone, or run the wooden striker firmly around the outside rim with even pressure until it sings. The singing technique takes about ten minutes to click.
What do the engraved designs mean?
The range includes traditional motifs such as the Five Buddhas, Ganesh, Tree of Life, Om and mantra script. The engraving adds symbolic meaning without changing how the bowl is played.
What comes with the bowl?
Bowls are sold individually and as gift sets, including chakra sets. Sets include the striker and cushion; check each listing for what is included. Strikers and cushions are also available separately from £2.
Do I need to pick a bowl by chakra or note?
Only if that framework matters to your practice. The chakra gift sets make that choice simple. Otherwise choose the size and design you are drawn to, because the bowl you love the sound of is the one you will use.
