Handmade Seagrass and Wooden Bird Boxes for British Gardens

A good bird house earns its place twice over, once as garden decoration and once each spring when smaller garden birds move in. Our seagrass bird boxes suit species like blue tits, wrens and robins that favour snug natural cavities, with woven walls that breathe well and keep nesting spaces dry and ventilated. Placement makes the difference between a decorative piece and an occupied one, so hang your bird house between 1.5 and 3 metres high, facing between north and east to avoid the worst rain and strong afternoon sun, away from feeders and busy paths, and with a clear flight line to the entrance. Autumn and winter hanging gives birds time to find and inspect the box before spring nesting begins. The carved tree trunk faces in this collection, our wise owl and famously grumpy old man, bring character to a garden and always draw comment, working beautifully on a mature tree trunk or fence post. Being natural handmade pieces, a sheltered spot extends their life considerably. Clean occupied boxes gently each autumn once nesting has completely finished.

Are these decorative or working bird boxes?

Both, and it is worth knowing which you are buying. The solid wood houses, including the carved tree trunk face designs, are built to handle outdoor exposure year round. The small round seagrass boxes are cosy natural roosting pockets best placed in a sheltered spot.

Where should I position a bird house?

Two to four metres up with a clear flight path to the entrance, facing away from prevailing wind and rain, with some cover from cats and larger birds. Away from feeders, because nesting birds want privacy.

When should it go up?

By late winter. Birds scout nesting sites from February, and a box up in autumn gets used for winter roosting first. Do not be discouraged by a quiet first season; occupancy jumps once a box has weathered in.

Any maintenance?

Once a year in autumn: clear out old nesting material and rinse with boiling water only, no chemicals. Never treat the inside of the box.
