World Meditation Day, and Starting Something Small

World Meditation Day, and Starting Something Small

World Meditation Day falls on 21 May and is the sort of observance that exists mainly as a prompt. Nobody has a tradition attached to it and there is nothing to buy for it.

What it is good for is the same thing New Year is good for, which is a date to start something. So here is what actually helps, from a shop that sells objects and will tell you honestly which of them matter.

Why most people stop

Almost everyone who starts meditating stops within a fortnight, and the reasons are consistent enough to plan around.

Reason What actually fixes it
Back or knees ache within minutes Sit higher. Hips above knees, on a cushion or folded blanket
Not knowing when to stop A sound at start and end, so the decision is removed
Forgetting entirely A visible object in the place you sit, which prompts you
Feeling you are doing it wrong Nobody can stop thinking. Noticing you drifted and returning is the practice
No consistent place One spot used repeatedly, however small, beats a nice room used occasionally

Notice that only two of those are solved by buying anything, and the first is solved by a folded blanket.

Why most people stop

Sit higher, and buy nothing to do it

The single commonest reason people give up is physical discomfort, and it is almost always the same cause. Sitting flat on the floor tips the pelvis back, which rounds the lower back, which aches within four minutes.

Lifting the hips above the knees fixes it. A folded blanket works. A firm cushion you already own works. A chair works and is not a compromise.

We sell nothing for this and would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

What a sound actually does

This is where an object genuinely earns its place, and the mechanism is practical rather than mystical.

A bowl struck once at the beginning and once at the end removes the question of when to stop. Without it you spend the last third of every sit wondering whether it has been long enough, which is a reliable way to make ten minutes unpleasant.

You do not need a large bowl. A chakra singing bowl gift set at £34.99 arrives complete with a matched cushion and striker, and at arm's length a small bowl is better than a large one. Our guide to choosing your first singing bowl covers the decision.

What a sound actually does

What an object actually does

Being honest, because this category overstates it constantly.

A statue does not radiate calm. What it does is mark a place, and a place used consistently becomes easier to return to. That is the same mechanism that makes a kitchen table feel like somewhere to eat, and it is genuinely useful.

It is also a visible prompt, and forgetting is the second commonest reason people stop. Something in your line of sight is a reminder, and reminders are the least glamorous and most effective element of behaviour change.

Our article on why meditation statues aid focus covers the reasoning.

What the evidence supports

Worth stating plainly. Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy is recommended by NICE in England as an option for preventing relapse in recurrent depression, which is a genuine clinical endorsement rather than a wellness claim. There is reasonable evidence for reductions in reported stress and anxiety across various programmes.

Effects on physical health outcomes and cognitive performance are less established, and reviews have noted problems with study quality and small samples. There is also a small literature on adverse effects, with a minority of people experiencing increased anxiety or distressing memories during intensive practice.

None of that is a reason not to try. It is a reason to be sceptical of anyone promising more.

Ten minutes is enough to start

Not five, which is short enough that nothing settles, and not thirty, which is long enough that you will skip it on a bad day and then skip it again.

Ten minutes daily beats forty minutes on Sundays by a considerable margin, because the point is the repetition rather than the duration.

If you want to do more than sit at home

A structured course is the honest recommendation over any purchase. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy are the two established eight week programmes in Britain, and some are available through the NHS on referral. Your GP is a reasonable first call.

For a group, our article on Buddhist practice at home covers the context, and most British Buddhist centres welcome newcomers on a donation basis.

Questions people ask

When is World Meditation Day?

21 May. There is no tradition attached to it, and its main value is as a prompt to start something.

Why do most people stop meditating?

Physical discomfort, not knowing when to stop, forgetting, and feeling they are doing it wrong. Only two of those are solved by buying anything.

What do I actually need to start?

Somewhere to sit that puts your hips above your knees, which a folded blanket does. Everything else is optional.

How long should I meditate?

Ten minutes daily. Five is too short for anything to settle and thirty is long enough that you will skip it on a bad day.

Does a statue or bowl help?

A bowl removes the question of when to stop, which is genuinely useful. A statue marks a place and prompts you. Neither does anything mystical.
