Pillar candles are the freestanding kind with no container. They look better unlit than a jar does, they behave completely differently when burning, and they are less forgiving in almost every respect.
Here is the honest comparison, including why our range is jars.
The fundamental difference
| Pillar | Container or jar | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | The wax is the object. It holds its own shape | The glass holds the shape, the wax does not |
| Wax type | Harder, higher melting point, so it stands up | Softer, which releases fragrance more readily |
| Scent throw | Generally weaker, because harder wax holds fragrance more tightly | Generally stronger |
| Failure mode | Tunnels, then the wall breaches and wax floods out | Tunnels, and the wax stays in the jar |
| Needs | A plate or holder. Always | Nothing |
| Burn time | Long, if managed well | Long, and easier to manage |
Why pillars have weaker scent
Physics rather than quality. A pillar has to stand up under its own weight while burning, which means harder wax with a higher melting point.
Harder wax holds fragrance more tightly and releases it more slowly. A softer container wax gives the fragrance up more readily, which is why a jar candle usually scents a room faster and more strongly than a pillar of the same size.
If scent is the point, a jar wins. If appearance unlit is the point, a pillar wins.
The way pillars go wrong
Pillars tunnel like any candle, and then something happens that jars cannot do. The wax pool eats through one side of the wall, and everything inside floods out onto whatever the candle is standing on.
This is why pillar candles need a proper plate with a lip, not a coaster. And it is why the first burn matters even more than with a jar.
The rule is the same. Burn until the melted pool reaches the outer edge all the way round, roughly one hour per inch of diameter. Our guide to how long a candle should burn on its first light covers wax memory properly.
Hugging a pillar
A technique worth knowing if you already own pillars. When the candle is still warm after extinguishing, press the raised outer edge gently inward with your thumbs so it folds toward the centre.
Done after each burn this keeps the top level and prevents the wall from becoming a thin rim. It genuinely extends the life of a pillar and almost nobody does it.
What we sell instead
Our scented candle range is glass jars in three sizes and four fragrances, and the reasoning is that jars fail more gracefully.
Small jars at £12.99 suit a bedroom, bathroom or desk. Medium at £15.99 suit an average living room. Tall at £24.99 suit an open plan space and burn considerably longer.
The four fragrances are Seabreeze, which is fresh and marine, Amber Mosaic, which is warm and resinous, Wildlight Woods, which is woody, and Drawn by Flame, which is smoky. Our guide to choosing a scented candle that suits the room covers matching scent to space.
If you want a pillar look
Two routes that get you there without the drawbacks.
Use unscented pillars for appearance and a jar candle for scent. This is what most people who care about both actually do, and it works because you are not asking one object to do two jobs badly.
Or use a candle holder with an ordinary candle. Our antique figurine range includes the devotee candle holder at £21.99 and the three devotees candle holder at £36.99, which give you height and form with none of the flooding risk.
Safety, which differs
A pillar has an open flame with no glass around it, which changes the rules. Further from curtains and anything overhanging. Never on a surface that matters to you. And genuinely never unattended, because the failure mode is molten wax escaping rather than staying put.
Questions people ask
Are pillar candles better than jar candles?
Better looking unlit, worse at scent and considerably less forgiving. Pillar wax is harder so it stands up, and harder wax releases fragrance more slowly.
Why did my pillar candle leak wax everywhere?
The pool ate through one side of the wall, which is what pillars do when they tunnel. Always use a plate with a lip rather than a flat coaster.
How do I stop a pillar tunnelling?
Burn until the pool reaches the outer edge on the first light, roughly one hour per inch of diameter. Then press the warm outer edge inward with your thumbs after each burn.
Do you sell pillar candles?
No. Our range is glass jars in three sizes and four fragrances, because jars fail more gracefully and scent more strongly.
How do I get the pillar look with better scent?
Use unscented pillars for appearance alongside a jar candle for fragrance, or use a candle holder, which gives height and form without the flooding risk.
