How to Style a Large Dream Catcher on a Plain Wall

How to Style a Large Dream Catcher on a Plain Wall

Large woven hangings are having a long moment in British interiors, and the reason is straightforward: most of us have at least one wall that has defeated us. Too big for a picture, too awkward for shelving, too visible to leave blank.

A large hoop solves that wall better than almost anything, provided it is hung properly. Here is how.

Negative space is the whole technique

The instinct with a big empty wall is to fill it, and it is the wrong instinct. A large macrame piece works precisely because of the plain surface around it, which lets the eye read the pattern of the weave against the wall.

Give it room. As a rule, leave at least half the width of the piece as clear wall on either side. If you cannot manage that, the wall wants a smaller piece rather than a crowded large one. Our large brown Elemental Spirits and large turquoise hangings are designed to be the only thing on a wall, and they lose most of their effect when they are not.

Height, and the mistake everyone makes

Too high, almost universally. People hang art at the height it feels important rather than the height it is seen from, and on a tall blank wall the temptation to centre the piece vertically is strong.

The gallery convention is that the centre of a piece sits at around 145 to 150cm from the floor, which is average standing eye level. On a wall people mostly see while seated, drop it further. On a staircase wall, hang to the eye line of someone climbing rather than someone standing at the bottom.

When in doubt, lower. A piece hung slightly low reads as deliberate; one hung high reads as stranded.

Height, and the mistake everyone makes

What sits well beside one

Very little, and that is the point. If the wall genuinely needs more than one object, the reliable approach is to pair a large hoop with something of a completely different character rather than something similar.

A carved wooden piece on a shelf below works because texture and material contrast. A row of small framed prints does not, because they compete for the same kind of attention. Plants work particularly well, since trailing foliage echoes the softness of cord without imitating it.

What fails is symmetry. A large hoop centred with matching objects either side turns a textile piece into a mantelpiece arrangement and loses the informality that makes it work.

Lighting, and the shadow

The most underused trick with any woven hanging. Light it from one side at a shallow angle and the weave throws its own shadow onto the wall, doubling the pattern and adding depth that flat lighting completely removes.

A floor lamp placed to one side, or a picture light above and slightly off centre, does this. Direct overhead light is the worst case, flattening the piece into a silhouette. In the evening the shadow effect is stronger, which is worth knowing when choosing a wall for a room used mostly after dark.

Colour against the wall

Natural and cream cord reads best against a mid tone or dark wall, where the contrast lets the weave stand out. Against a white wall a natural piece can disappear at a distance, which is where the coloured hangings earn their place.

The large multi holds its own on a pale wall, and the turquoise works well against warm neutrals and wood. If your wall is white and you want natural cord, plan for side lighting so the shadow provides the contrast the colour cannot.

Rented walls

These are light pieces, which makes renting easy. Adhesive hooks rated well above the actual weight will hold a large macrame hanging on a smooth clean wall, provided you follow the fitting instructions properly, which almost nobody does. Clean the wall with the supplied wipe, press for the stated time, and wait the full recommended period before hanging anything.

For removal, pull the tab slowly and straight down rather than away from the wall. Rushing that step is what takes the paint with it.

Where these work beyond the bedroom

Staircase walls, landings and hallways all suit a large hoop, and all tend to be blank in British houses. A living room chimney breast works if the piece is the only thing on it. Home offices behind a desk work particularly well, since a soft textured piece reads well on camera where framed art can glare.

For sizing above a bed specifically, our guide to how big a dream catcher should be above a bed has the measurements.

Questions people ask

How much space should be around a large dream catcher?

At least half the width of the piece as clear wall on either side. A large hoop works because of the plain surface around it, so crowding it removes most of the effect.

How high should I hang a large wall hanging?

Centre it around 145 to 150cm from the floor for a wall seen while standing, and lower for a room where people are usually seated. Hanging too high is the commonest error.

What should I hang next to a macrame dream catcher?

Ideally nothing. If the wall needs more, choose something of contrasting character such as a carved piece on a shelf below or trailing plants, rather than framed prints which compete for the same attention.

How do I light a woven wall hanging?

From one side at a shallow angle, so the weave casts its own shadow onto the wall. Overhead light flattens the piece into a silhouette.

Will it work on a white wall?

Coloured pieces will. Natural cord can disappear against white at a distance, so either choose a colour or plan side lighting so the shadow supplies the contrast.
