How to Spot a Machine Carved Statue Sold as Hand Carved

How to Spot a Machine Carved Statue Sold as Hand Carved

Hand carved is one of the least regulated phrases in retail. It is applied to genuinely hand worked pieces, to machine roughed pieces finished by hand, and to moulded objects with no carving involved at all.

The differences are visible once you know where to look, and the checks take under a minute.

Perfect symmetry is the clearest warning

Start here. Human hands do not produce symmetry. A hand carved face has one eyebrow marginally higher, one side of the mouth slightly different, ears that are close but not identical.

A moulded or machine produced piece is symmetrical to the millimetre, because it came from a form or a program. Look at a face straight on and compare the two halves. Near enough but not exact is the signature of hand work. Exact is the signature of a machine.

Perfect symmetry is the clearest warning

Repeated identical detail

If you can see several examples of the same design, whether on a shelf or in a listing gallery, compare them. Hand carved pieces vary noticeably: the fall of a robe differs, the expression differs, the dimensions differ by a centimetre or so.

If every example is indistinguishable, they were not carved individually. This is the single most reliable check available and it costs nothing.

Tool marks

Hand carving leaves facets, small flat planes where a blade removed material. They are most visible in concave areas and in places that are awkward to sand: inside folds, behind limbs, under a chin.

Machine work leaves regular curved scoring, often in a consistent pattern, and moulded work leaves no tool marks at all but may show mould seams, usually as a faint line running down the sides of a piece where the two halves met.

Look for a seam first, since it is definitive.

Grain, and where it is decisive

On a genuine wooden carving, the grain runs continuously through the whole form and passes across the surface in an unbroken pattern, changing appearance where the surface curves.

On composite pieces made from wood dust and resin, sometimes described as wood composite or reconstituted wood, there is either no grain or a printed grain that does not respond to the shape of the object. If the grain pattern looks the same across a curve as it does on a flat area, it is printed rather than real.

Weight

Solid wood is dense and a carved piece feels substantial for its size. Composite and hollow resin do not. This is the fastest check in a shop and the one you cannot do online, which is why the others matter.

If a listing states a weight, compare it with what solid timber of that size would plausibly weigh. A large statue weighing very little is not solid wood.

The back and the underside

Where corners get cut and where hand work reveals itself. A genuine carving is worked all round, even if the back is simpler than the front, and the tool marks continue there.

A piece made for photographs is detailed at the front and flat, rough or unfinished behind. A moulded piece is often perfectly finished everywhere including places nobody would bother carving, which is its own tell.

What a finish can hide

Heavy paint, thick lacquer and dense antiquing all conceal surface evidence, which is sometimes exactly why they are applied.

On a heavily finished piece, rely on symmetry and weight rather than surface detail, and look at the profile rather than the front. The proportions of a hand carved piece show slight irregularity in profile that a mould does not.

Buying online

Four things to look for in a listing. Photographs from multiple angles including the back. A named material rather than simply wood. A stated weight. And ideally a note that pieces vary, which an honest seller of hand carved goods will say because it prevents complaints.

Be suspicious of a listing where every product photograph in a range looks identical, and of any seller who will not answer a direct question about how a piece was made.

Where we stand

Our hand carved statues are cut and shaped by hand from solid wood, which is why they vary in size and detail between pieces and why the hand applied finishes break differently on each one. We also sell resin statues, which are moulded, and we describe them as resin rather than dressing them up.

Both are legitimate products. What is not legitimate is calling the second the first, and our guide to how a hand carved statue is made sets out what the process actually involves.

Questions people ask

How can I tell if a statue is really hand carved?

Look for slight asymmetry, tool marks in concave areas, continuous grain that responds to the surface curve, and variation between examples of the same design. Perfect symmetry means a mould or a machine.

What is a mould seam?

A faint line running down the sides of a piece where two halves of a mould met. It is the most definitive evidence that an object was cast rather than carved.

Does a heavy finish hide the evidence?

It can, which is sometimes why it is applied. On heavily finished pieces rely on symmetry, weight and the profile view rather than surface detail.

What should I check in an online listing?

Photographs from several angles including the back, a named material rather than just wood, a stated weight, and a note that pieces vary, which honest sellers of hand carved goods include.

Is resin worse than carved wood?

It is different rather than worse, and it has real advantages in damp rooms and at lower prices. What matters is that it is described accurately rather than sold as carving.
