How to Choose a Gong When You Have Only Ever Heard One in a Class

Almost nobody buys their first gong having studied gongs. You go to a sound bath, lie on a mat, and something enormous happens for forty minutes. Weeks later you find yourself looking at listings and realising you have no idea what you heard, how big it was, or what you would need at home.

This guide is for that person. It covers what changes as a gong gets larger, what the stand has to do, why the mallet matters more than people expect, and which of our healing gongs suits which kind of room.

What size actually changes

Diameter is the main variable, and it changes three things at once. A larger gong sounds lower, because a bigger vibrating surface produces a deeper fundamental note. It also sustains for longer, since there is more metal in motion and more energy to dissipate. And it takes longer to build, meaning you can strike it repeatedly and softly and watch the sound grow rather than arrive.

That third quality is what most people are remembering from a class. The wall of sound in a sound bath is not one enormous hit. It is a large gong being built patiently over a minute or more, and it needs surface area to do it. A small gong struck hard is loud. A large gong struck softly and often is immersive, which is a different experience entirely.

Our four sizes, and who each suits

We keep healing gongs at four diameters, each supplied in a wooden stand.

25cm. The small gong in a wooden stand, in black or greenwash, is a personal instrument. Bright rather than deep, quick to speak, and easily carried between rooms. It suits a home practice, a small treatment room, or anyone testing whether a gong belongs in their life at all. It will not produce a sound bath, and it does not pretend to.

35cm. The 35cm in greenwash or black is the size where building becomes possible. There is enough surface to develop a wash of sound rather than a single note, and enough restraint to live in a normal British room without dominating it. If you want one recommendation for a first gong that will not be outgrown in a year, this is it.

50cm. The 50cm, also in greenwash, is a serious instrument for a dedicated space. Deeper, longer sustaining, and genuinely capable of the immersive quality people come home from a class wanting. It needs floor space, clearance, and a household that has agreed to it.

80cm. The 80cm in an antique dragon stand, and its patterned version, is practitioner scale. This is what you lay under in a sound bath. It is also a piece of furniture, an object people comment on before it is ever struck, and a commitment to a room rather than a corner.

Our four sizes, and who each suits

The stand is not an accessory

A gong has to hang freely to sound properly. Anything touching the metal while it rings damps the vibration and shortens the sustain, which is why a gong resting against a wall or held in the hand sounds like a dustbin lid and a gong suspended in a frame sounds like a gong.

All of our healing gongs come with their wooden stand, which removes the commonest first purchase mistake: buying the gong, discovering the stand is separate, and finding it costs a meaningful fraction of the instrument again. The stand also decides where the gong can live, since it needs a level floor and enough clearance behind for the metal to move.

Mallets, and why the one you use changes everything

A gong is not really one instrument. It is a surface that behaves completely differently depending on what strikes it, and the mallet is the largest single influence on the sound after diameter.

A soft felted mallet spreads the impact and encourages the low fundamental, which is what you want for building a wash. Our 23cm felted gong mallet is the general purpose choice, and the 30cm suits the larger gongs where more mass is needed to move more metal. Harder or smaller strikers produce a brighter, more percussive attack with less depth, which has its uses but is not what most people are chasing.

If you own a gong and have never tried a second mallet, that is the cheapest upgrade available to you.

When a singing bowl is the better answer

Worth saying plainly, because it will be true for some readers. If you live in a flat with shared walls, practise late at night, or want something you can use for five minutes without ceremony, a Tibetan singing bowl may serve you better than any gong. Bowls are quieter, faster to pick up and put down, and considerably easier to store. Many people end up owning both, and most of them started with a bowl.

Our guide to living with a gong in a terraced house goes into the neighbour question honestly, and is worth reading before you commit.

Questions people ask

What size gong should a beginner buy?

The 35cm healing gong is the usual answer. It has enough surface to build a wash of sound rather than produce single notes, and it suits a normal room. The 25cm is a good choice if space or volume is the constraint.

Do your gongs come with a stand?

Yes. Every healing gong we sell is supplied in its wooden stand, from the 25cm through to the 80cm in an antique dragon stand. A gong must hang freely to sound properly, so the stand is part of the instrument rather than an accessory.

Does a bigger gong sound better?

It sounds lower and sustains for longer, which is what most people mean. Whether that is better depends on your room. A large gong in a small space is overwhelming rather than immersive.

What mallet do I need?

A soft felted mallet for building a low wash. Our 23cm felted mallet suits most gongs and the 30cm suits the larger sizes. Harder strikers give a brighter attack with less depth.

Can I use a gong in a normal house?

Yes, with thought about size, timing and neighbours. The 25cm and 35cm are the realistic sizes for most British homes. Anything larger wants a dedicated space.
