How Loud a Tabletop Fountain Actually Is

People buy a fountain for the sound of water and then discover there are two sounds coming out of it. One is the water, which is what they wanted. The other is the pump, which nobody mentioned.

Understanding the difference explains most of what determines whether a fountain becomes a pleasure or an irritation.

How Loud a Tabletop Fountain Actually Is

Pump hum against water sound

The pump is a small electric motor, and it produces a low continuous hum. In an otherwise quiet room that hum is audible, and unlike the water it has no variation, which is precisely what makes it noticeable.

The human ear tunes out irregular natural sounds and struggles to tune out steady mechanical ones. That is why a fountain can be lovely for a week and then suddenly all you can hear is the motor.

Two things reduce it considerably. Making sure the pump is fully submerged, since a partly exposed pump is far louder, and making sure it is not resting against the side of the bowl, which transmits vibration into the whole structure and turns the bowl into a speaker.

Water sound depends on drop height

The pleasant part, and it is adjustable in ways most owners never try.

A short drop produces a gentle trickle. A longer drop produces a distinct splash and considerably more volume. Cascading designs, where water falls through several levels such as the cascading lotus pots, produce a fuller sound than a single fall.

Water landing on a hard surface is sharper than water landing into a pool, which is why raising the water level in the receiving bowl softens the whole character of the sound.

Adjusting the flow

Most fountain pumps have an adjustable flow control, usually a small lever or dial on the pump body, and a great many owners never notice it.

Turning the flow down reduces both the volume of the water sound and, usually, the pump noise. It also reduces splash and slows evaporation. If your fountain is louder than you want, this is the first thing to try and it takes a minute.

Why it sounds louder at night

Not your imagination. Ambient noise in a British house drops considerably after around ten at night: traffic thins, neighbours settle, appliances stop. The fountain has not changed but the background it sits against has.

There is also a physiological element, since lying still with nothing to attend to makes any steady sound more prominent. This is the same reason a dripping tap is intolerable at two in the morning and unnoticed at two in the afternoon.

Bedrooms, honestly assessed

The question we are asked most often, and the honest answer is that it depends entirely on the person.

Some people find running water genuinely settling and sleep better for it. Others find any continuous sound keeps them at the surface of sleep, and a proportion of people find water specifically makes them need the bathroom, which is a real effect and not a joke.

If you want to try it, use the smallest piece you can, turn the flow to its lowest setting, and place it as far from the bed as the room allows. And accept that you may end up switching it off at bedtime and running it in the evening instead, which is a perfectly good compromise.

Offices and working rooms

Generally a better setting than a bedroom. A steady water sound provides a mild masking effect against intermittent noises from elsewhere in a house, which is genuinely useful when working from home.

The caution is video calls, where a fountain within range of a microphone is considerably more audible to the people you are speaking to than to you. Either place it out of microphone range or switch it off for calls.

Living rooms

The most forgiving setting, since a living room has enough ambient activity to absorb the sound and enough space to place the fountain away from seating.

The one consideration is television. A fountain near a television competes directly with dialogue, so place it on the opposite side of the room from the screen and seating.

When a fountain will annoy rather than calm

Being straightforward, since a returned fountain helps nobody. If you are someone who notices the fridge, is bothered by a clock ticking, or finds background music distracting rather than pleasant, a fountain is likely to join that list.

In that case the same calm can be had from a piece that makes no sound at all, and our guide to lighting a statue covers a quieter way to make a corner feel considered.

Questions people ask

Are tabletop fountains noisy?

They produce two sounds: the water, which is what you want, and a low pump hum, which is steady and therefore harder to tune out. Submerging the pump fully and keeping it clear of the bowl sides reduces the hum considerably.

Can I make a fountain quieter?

Yes. Most pumps have an adjustable flow control that many owners never notice. Turning it down reduces water volume, pump noise, splash and evaporation together.

Why does it sound louder at night?

Because ambient household noise drops sharply after around ten, so the same sound sits against a much quieter background. Lying still with nothing to attend to also makes steady sounds more prominent.

Should I put a fountain in a bedroom?

It depends on the person. Some sleep better for it, others find any continuous sound keeps them at the surface of sleep. Use the smallest piece at the lowest flow, placed as far from the bed as possible.

Will it be heard on video calls?

Yes, and more clearly by the other participants than by you. Place it out of microphone range or switch it off for calls.
